Holy Church of Panagia Kardiotissa (Fourfouras)

Holy Church of Panagia Kardiotissa (Fourfouras)

The ruins of a small monastery are preserved at the Livada location southeast of the settlement of Fourfouras, around the single-room, vaulted church of Panagia, which at the beginning of the 19th century extended westward. In its eastern part, frescoes dating back to around 1400 have been preserved. The iconographic program does not present particularities.

The founding inscription revealed in the sanctuary, as well as the later inscription on the main temple, confirms its dedication to the Virgin Mary by Nikolaos Arkoleos and members of his family. The written sources also document in the area of Amari the presence of a branch of the well-known family linked to the tradition of the Twelve Nobles, while notarial documents of the 17th century confirm the existence of a monastery in that particular location.

The inhabitants of Fourfouras choose to celebrate May Day every year in this wonderful, green location of cypress trees overlooking the Amari Valley.
