Smiles

Smiles

Smiles is a village that can be found just 1 km east of the village of Vryses.

In August 1944, its razing by the Nazis led to gradual desolation and the final abandonment of the settlement.

The houses are in ruins, yet there are sights to be seen here. Of interest is the late Byzantine church of Panagia, inside which frescoes from the 14th century are preserved, the church of Christ the Savior, and the old village fountain, which was probably built during the years of the Turkish occupation.

At a short distance from the settlement, it is worth visiting the Smiliano Gorge created by the Kalamavkas or Smilianos River, a location of special natural beauty. Smiliano Gefyri, a picturesque old stone bridge built over the river is also situated nearby.
