Vlastoi House

Vlastoi House

This beautiful mansion is located in the village of Vizari and has been declared a preserved monument. It is the residence of the Vlastoi family, one of the most powerful families in Crete during the Second Byzantine period and the Venetian rule. According to legends that survive to this day, Vlastos according to tradition was one of the twelve noble children, brought by the Byzantine Emperor Alexios II Komnenos the Porphyroborn (1180-1183) with their families to Crete, to consolidate his rule of the island and to strengthen its defense against the Arabs and the pirates. After the occupation of Crete by the Ottomans, Vlastoi took the lead in the liberation struggles of the island.

One of the best-known descendants of the old aristocratic family is Pavlos Vlastos (1832 – 1926), who is today considered the father of Cretan folklore.
